CRS research contributes to global impact in sleep health with pioneering smartphone app
ResApp, an industry leader in digital health smartphone applications for the diagnosis of respiratory disease, has just announced the release of SleepCheck, a smartphone based application which is able to screen patients for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). CRS played a major role in the research of this application.
With results of more than 80% comparability to In Lab sleep studies (the “gold standard” of OSA diagnosis), SleepCheck can accurately screen patients for OSA by analysing breathing and snoring sounds during sleep from the comfort of a patient’s own home.
OSA is a widely recognised sleep-breathing disorder consisting of repetitive airway closures, causing breathing issues in a person’s sleep. More than three in every ten men and nearly two in every ten women are affected by this condition that causes snoring, daytime sleepiness, and if left untreated is linked to weight gain and severe conditions such as heart disease, hypertension and stroke.
SleepCheck is CE marked as a Class I medical device, which means it conforms to all European regulatory standards and will be soon listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). SleepCheck is expected to be available on the App Store later this year, making this ground-breaking and easily applied tool accessible to millions of people across the globe.
CRS and CRS CEO, Dr Philip Currie, principal investigator of the validation study of SleepCheck, said, “SleepCheck fills a unique and very important place in the evaluation of OSA between questionnaire-based screening and use of increasingly complex types of sleep studies requiring multiple wires and sensors. Any person with a smartphone can be simply screened for OSA using SleepCheck. This screening is especially important for patients with pre-existing conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, stroke, obesity, or type 2 diabetes where OSA is more likely, more severe and therefore more important to identify and treat.”
CRS are proud of the research our team conducted in supporting the development of such a ground-breaking, innovative tool to help our patients and millions more who suffer from undiagnosed OSA.
